College of Science Equity Projects Request for Funding 

The College of Science Equity Projects Program is designed to provide COS faculty with the opportunity and support to advance equity at the college, department, or classroom level. Proposals should have a focus on advancing systemic changes that will have a lasting impact. Up to a total of $30K of COS Foundation funds are available. $10K of the total will be provided through the Rise Fund and is earmarked for projects that address disability issues or an accessibility need.

Fund objective

Advance equity in the college or department for students at any level (undergraduate or graduate) by addressing a systemic need or challenge. Including but not limited to projects that address needs or challenges associated with disability issues or an accessibility need.

Eligibility

College of Science academic, professional and research faculty.

Award criteria requirements

  • Projects must address an equity need or gap in the college or department.
  • Proposed projects should not be for work already initiated, funded or assigned as part of normal job duties. The only exception is for proposals to support unfunded elements of assigned work that advance the fund objective and would otherwise not happen without this funding.
  • Preference will be given to projects that address disability issues or an accessibility need.
  • Preference will be given to projects that focus on systemic change and/or have large impacts.
  • Preference will be given to projects that directly support the retention of new students.

Awards and usage

~4-8 awards will be awarded with a maximum of 10K per award

  • Funds can be used for direct faculty support – (teaching release or faculty buy outs with permission of department head?)
  • Funds can be used for supplies and materials
  • Funds can be used for professional development directly related to and in support of a project task or deliverable
  • Funds cannot be used for direct student support

Application materials

  • In lieu of a CV, provide a description of your preparation or qualifications in designing and completing your proposed project. (1p age or less)
  • Proposal (~3 pages max)
  • Description of proposed activities and how these will support the objective of the fund
  • Address implementation plan and/or sustainable use of deliverables
  • Preliminary budget (cost sharing is welcomed but not required)
  • If applicable, please provide details of how this project will address disability issues or an accessibility need.
  • If applicable, please provide details of how this project will directly support the retention of new students.
  • Brief endorsement from unit
  • Including a certification from department head or supervisor that this proposed project is not for work already assigned as part of normal job duties

Or

  • Including a certification that this project supports unfunded elements of assigned work that advance the fund objective and would otherwise not happen without this funding.

Examples

  • Open Education Resources (OER) or other ways to significantly reduce costs for students
  • Development of an DPO/A course for the college
  • High level (major) curriculum review to enhance equity or accessibility
  • Redesign of a specific course to substantially improve equity or accessibility
  • Integration of career outcomes into courses or curricula
  • Development of culturally competent advising toolkit, including the support of students with disabilities
  • Creation of department level undergraduate or graduate student mentoring program focused on equity
  • Project to analyze data to refine/improve development or implementation of equity focused interventions
  • Review of department policies and data to examine systemic inequities and implementation of changes in support of students with disabilities
  • Develop or utilize existing tools to implement an effective proactive early alert system
