We are excited to announce a call for proposals for the Gaulke Center for Marine Innovation and Technology. This initiative aims to leverage the diverse strengths of our faculty to foster multidisciplinary research teams focused on marine innovation and technology to address pressing global challenges. All faculty are encouraged to collaborate and submit a proposal, with the requirement there be at least one investigator from two of the following colleges: CAS, COE and CEOAS.

Thanks to a generous gift from Judy and Mike Gaulke, this investment is meant to “seed” efforts to nucleate teams, collect initial data, develop concepts, and expand the capabilities of existing teams in creative new ways. The goal is to lead and support innovative research and technology development that helps society better understand, protect and utilize the ocean and its environment.

Key Details:

  • Proposal Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2024, by 5:00 pm PT
  • Funding Amount: Up to $50,000 each for one year, with the possibility for a one-year time extension.
  • Eligibility: All faculty are encouraged to collaborate and submit a proposal, with the requirement there be at least one investigator from two of the following colleges: CAS, COE and CEOAS.

Two types of projects will be funded:

  • One-year pilot projects aimed at developing concepts for federal funding agencies.
  • High-risk, high-reward projects that push the boundaries of our understanding of the marine environment, but are unlikely to receive federal funding at this point.

Submission Process:

Proposals should be submitted as a single PDF document via the submission portal.

For questions or guidance on proposal development, please reach out to the Associate Deans for Research:

Full details of the call for proposals are attached. Thanks, and we encourage you to collaborate and submit proposals to advance this vital work to help us better understand the ocean and its environment.
