The Office of Research Integrity and Environmental Health & Safety are excited to announce the Fieldwork Safety Series 2025, this April through June. Building on the success of last year’s field safety awareness month we are offering more training, more resources, hands-on demos, and a Field Work Photo Contest!

ll events and training are free of charge to OSU employees to prepare you and your teams for safe and productive research and learning in the field this season. Hatfield Marine Science Center Field Day.

April 23, 2025, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, HMSC Guin Library field

Tap into your inner child at a field safety Field Day at HMSC. Participate in various field safety stations, including Survival Suit races, Tourniquet challenges, lift and retrieval drills, fire safety training, and a small boat safety gear contest. Enjoy snacks, prizes, and more.

Fieldwork Safety Day at OSU Corvallis Campus.

May 7, 2025, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, LaSells Stewart Center

This event includes presentations about offroad driving and wildland fire safety, followed by hands-on training at Parker Plaza. Opportunities include using a fire extinguisher on a real fire, demo fire safety gear, and perform vehicle safety checks.

Safety Success in International Fieldwork

May 15, 2025, 9:00 am - 10:00 am, Via Zoom

This dynamic series of lightning talks will equip researchers and students with essential knowledge for safely and successfully conducting international fieldwork. Learn lessons and best practices from the real-world experiences of OSU researchers and experts who have participated in fieldwork abroad.

De-escalation Strategies for OSU Researchers in Public Interactions

May 21, 2025, 9:00am-11:00 am, Memorial Union Rm 208

This workshop will equip OSU researchers with the tools and strategies necessary to handle challenging interactions with the public during fieldwork. In this session, learn strategies to diffuse difficult interactions, encourage respectful communication, resolve conflict, and access institutional resources for support. Presented by Natalie Guerra-Hughes, Assistant Director of OSU Assist and Student Care Services. Limited to 40 participants.

EpiPen Training.

May 27, 2025, 9:00 am - 10:00 am, LaSells Stewart Center

OSU's Occupational Health Nurse will be offering an in-person EpiPen training session designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge to respond effectively in emergency situations involving anaphylaxis. This hands-on training will cover how to recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and provide step-by-step guidance on the safe and effective use of an EpiPen.

Developing Your Fieldwork Plan.

May 27, 2025, 10:15 am - 11:45 am, LaSells Stewart Center

Join us for a hands-on training event where you will develop your Fieldwork Safety Plan with guidance from OSU experts. In developing your plan, you will identify risks and strategies for safety management while in the field. You will consider your gear, emergency contacts, medical needs, logistics and more. Limited to 50 participants.

Wilderness First Aid.

Multiple dates in May and June.

Wilderness First Aid is a two-day training course designed for those who spend time in remote or outdoor settings. This course combines both didactic instruction and hands-on practical exercises to cover a wide range of essential topics, including patient assessment, wound care, fracture management, environmental emergencies, and evacuation techniques.

Adult CPR and AED.

Multiple dates in April, May, and June. Corvallis and Hatfield Marine Science Center

The American Heart Association Heartsaver® Adult CPR & AED is a 3.5 hour in-person session that will certify participants in Adult CPR, choking, use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and familiarization with Epi Pen, controlling bleeding, shock and stroke.
